When winners are the biggest losers …

“Winning isn’t everything … it’s the only thing!” Henry Russell “Red” Sanders, American football player and coach (1905 – 1958).

Do you think that Mr Sanders is correct? It seems that many people do. On TV we regularly see heart-wrenching scenes of sobbing people being told off by a judge because their singing/dancing routine was less than professional or because their chocolate self-saucing pudding was over-cooked. Yes, it seems that the being the best, being the winner, is the “only thing” that matters! Is it though?

I think that the video below makes a strong statement about Mr Sanders’ “Winning isn’t everything … it’s the only thing!” philosophy. What do you think?

  1. Yeah, I agreee with this, I mean winning is nice and all but really it doesn’t matter if you’re not having fun, even proffesionally.

  2. Yeah, I totally agree with this, I doesn’t matter whether or not you win or lose, its if you’re learning and having fun but you cant always get what you want.

  5. I found the video quite interesting as it really touched me when the crowd just ran to the player that got the goal in the end and supported him. However the question that has been asked i dont really know what to say. Could you please explain to me what it means?

    • Happy to explain Nily. At the beginning of the post I quoted a famous coach who once said that “Winning isn’t everything … it’s the only thing!” A lot of people seem to agree with this. Perhaps in some circumstances it might be true, but for most of us, is winning the main thing? What about our relationships with each other? What about caring for each other? So the question really is asking about what happens in the video? Does it show that people cared more about who won the game or more about the feelings of the young man with the disability? What do you think?

  7. I think that winning is not everything, yes it makes you really happy that you have achieved something really good, but it also gives you a chance to improve next time, where you could do better then the winner before and then you would be ranked even higher.

  8. winning isn’t everything. Sure winning is a nice feeling but if u r costintaly winning no one will want to verse you at anything and it becomes really boring. You are supposed to go out and enjoy yourself. Everyone wants to win and not everyone can win all the time.
Even if you don’t win sure you won’t feel as happy but you always come out with your head up high and not be a cow about it because everyone has strenths and weeknesses in them.

  10. Now that I have a more stronger understanding I believe that winning is certainly not the only thing because there is more too it then just winning like caring about others feelings when it really counts. And this message is clearly shown in the video by how the player from the other team really cared about the feelings of the person with disabilities rather than wining.

    • I agree with you Nily! It was really touching to see how everyone reacted and how united the whole community was by wanting the young disabled man to score a goal. It was obvious to me to that everyone gained much more joy from him being a part of the game than they ever would have gained from their team winning. It was beautiful to see the joy that can come from caring about people rather than thinking that all that matters is winning a silly game! I enjoyed reading your views. 🙂

  12. I think it matters on the person’s personality and what their goals are, you have people that want to win and you have people that need to win. Losing isn’t bad either it shows what you can improve on to be able to become a better person, either way you are determined to carry out what you’re doing in order to win or to lose. If you have been on a losing streak it is good to have one win, that one single win can improve your mood but in the end what are you playing for. Winner is just a title name it means nothing the same goes with the title loser; they are just names/titles so what’s the big deal: what are you playing for?

    • I think James that your comment “what their goals are” is the key to understanding the point of this post. When you play in a team, exactly what is it you are trying to achieve? If you are playing professional cricket for Australia then maybe it is about winning? Why do people join a local sports club with a bunch of other local people though? Is it to win games or is it really about other things? It feels good to win of course, but is this the main reason people gather together to play team sports? SO I like the question at the end of your reply – “what are you playing for?”

  14. WInning isn’t everything and if you kept winning EVERYTHING it wouldn’t be very fun. ANd when you loose you will try harder than a person who is overconfident that they will win.

But then again winning isn’t bad. Afterall, loosing everytime isn’t the best thing either. But it depends on your goals and what your good at (and you personality).

  15. In my opinion?
Winning is n’t everything. Sure, it’s nice and all, but we’ve got to face reality.
    For example…
Let’s say your competing in a competition. There are, what? 23 other people?
If they were equally as good as you, the chances of winning is equal to everyone. If they are better than you, your chances of winning are lower… so on and so on.
    So it really depends on
    A) The competition
    B) The understanding, personality and belief of the competitor
    and C)Sometimes the judge.
Reality isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, everyone’s heaven.
So it depends on a number of factor whether or not WInning is Everything.

    • This is true Janani. Perhaps another factor is why a group of people have come together as a team in the first place. Is the main reason social or is it to win games? If it’s social then, win or lose, isn’t it just the playing together, the relationships, that are the most important thing? Winning a game probably just gives everyone something extra to celebrate!

  17. In life there is never only one thing that is essential, just as in recreational activities you don’t need to be good to enjoy them. And these activities are participated in by people for the sole reason; that they want to play them because they enjoy them. On that basketball court there would not be a single player thinking “oh jeez, why am I here when I could be somewhere else”. They were there to enjoy a sport, and winning or losing shouldn’t prevent them from doing just that

  19. I find it kind of sad how when a player or team wins a game they take their victory to far. which leads to discrimination towards the other teams exploiting their talents and dreams. Either way they should be fair and conclude the game well as they are all doing something they truly love

  20. I totally agree with the statement that winning isn’t everything and this is shown when the player from the opposite team intentionally gave the ball to Mitchel to make his dream come true, to play and shot a basket this a prime example of this quote. winning isn’t everything.

  21. Winning isn’t everything. As it is a joyful feeling when you do win a game or event. Win or lose as long as you achieved your goal in the game, such as Mitchell Marcuse did.

  25. I believe that winning is not everything improvement is. However when we refer to TV shows they are entering to win the show and they need to be told where they are going wrong in order to have a chance at winning, also in most cases then negatives are the most obivious therefore that is why it is commonly refered to.

  27. I wholeheartedly agree that winning isn’t everything in fact in some cases winners can be some of the loneliest people which proves that sometimes you can gain more from losing then you can from winning not only that but losing also encourages you to push yourself more and aim higher whereas if you win you have confidence in your abilities to often and become cocky and out of practice in said abilities. In all losing makes a person humble and more then not even more grateful for what they gain when they lose

  28. Yes, winning isn’t everything. It seems to me that the only reason people want to win is because the feeling of achievement we get when you defeat your opponents. True winning may only be a title, but the true meaning of winning is to only be happy with yourself of what you have done.. that’s the true meaning of being a winner.
