Education is the key to reducing child marriage

According to the 2013/4 Education for all global monitoring report page 183, education would have the following influence on child marriage, early births and fertility rates:

For sub-Saharan Africa and South and West Asia

  • Child Marriage: The current level of 2,867,000 girls with no education getting married by 15 years of age would decrease 14% to 2,459,000 if all girls had a primary education and 64% to 1,044,000 if all girls had a secondary education.
  • Early Births: The current level of 3,397,000 girls with no education giving birth under 17 years of age would decrease 10% to 3,071,000 if all girls had a primary education and 59% to 1,393,000 if all girls had a secondary education.
  • Fertility Rates: The current average number of births per woman (in sub-Saharan Africa) is 6.7 for women with no education, 5.8 for women with a primary education and 3.9 for women with a secondary education.

Imagine what a difference simply giving girls the opportunity to be educated to secondary level would make to that would make to improving millions of lives? Education is not just about jobs; it is about making better life choices for yourself, for those you love, for your community and for the planet.
